The Road To Erskine (July, 2002)
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)
It is now July, 2002. Humphrey is about to start his second year of schooling in the US and he now has a group of supporters at Mars Hill who have taken an active interest in him personally and what God is doing in his life. We all realized that it was God working in and through Humphrey to also teach, grow and mature us in our faith walk. We also realized that Humphrey needed help in navigating the college process (choosing a degree course and the right school). Our support group began with 4 women whose job was to find out about the accreditation status of his present school and determine if his present course of study would lead to a degree that he could take back to Kenya and accomplish his mission there for God. After much frustration on our own part, the Holy Spirit sent us to Tim Erskine in Newberry, S.C. Tim is a past Mars Hill Church member who the church supported in attending and graduating from Erskine Theological Seminary in the mid 1990's. This was the first door God opened for Humphrey in his journey to Erskine. There would be several more doors opened in quick succession.
Tim arranged a meeting for Humphrey with Dr. Randy Ruble (past dean of Erskine seminary who now sits on a board that accredits seminaries all over the US). Another door opened. That meeting took place the last week in August at Dr. Ruble's home in Due West, S.C. Humphrey came away from that meeting with a course of study (masters in divinity) and the names of three accredited schools. Erskine was one of the 3 schools, so Tim decided to give Humphrey a tour of the campus while he was there. Tim not only took Humphrey on a tour of the campus, but Tim also made sure that Humphrey was introduced to several people on campus (the president of Erskine College, several professors at the seminary and the dean of the seminary, Dr. Gore). After a 20 minute chat with Dr. Gore in the hallway, Dr. Gore told Humphrey to get an admissions packet, fill it out and send it to him personally to review. A week later the admission packet had been filled out, prayed over and sent on its way. A week later a personal letter was received from Dr. Gore stating that Humphrey could enter Erskine as a master of divinity student for the spring semester. God was opening big doors!!
For the next few weeks it was a whirlwind of calls -- to the other two seminaries that were suggested and to Erskine as well. These calls were supplemented with much prayer asking for God's direction and His will in the entire process. Soon it was evident that Erskine was God's choice. There were insurmountable obstacles with the other seminaries, but God always intervened and worked out any obstacles at Erskine. After much prayer, Humphrey also felt that God was leading him to Erskine. From then on, we have all just been trying to keep up with God as He paves the way for Humphrey to pursue his education. Our small support of 4 women and their husbands has now grown to a total of 16 (8 couples). We have been blessed to watch how God has brought the group together to support Humphrey and in turn how Humphrey has blessed each of us and the church. You need only to talk with Humphrey for a few minutes to know that God has brought him this far and that God will bring his journey to completion. God will complete His work in and through Humphrey whether we agree to support and help him or not. The question you must ask yourself is "Do I want to participate in God's plan and work for Humphrey". My answer is a loud "Yes!". I don't want to miss an opportunity to actively participate in the work of God that will ultimately be taken halfway around the world to touch other lives and spread the Gospel through a humble servant who is living his life surrendered to God's plan. That humble servant is Humphrey Kanga.
Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Phillipians 1:6)
For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.
